Nearly a decade ago, a relatively small group of volunteers, residents of Boston City, gathered around the unique idea to establish Boston Collaborative for Food and Fitness. This partnership was envisioned as the project uniting delegates of various fields and sectors, including health care and public health professionals, government represents, nutritionists, ecologists, and many other individuals. The primary aim was to improve living conditions in Boston region and provide an environment based on healthy food, physical activity and overall healthy and stimulating atmosphere for all the citizens.

Major goals of BCFF?

Boston Collaborative for Food and Fitness is dedicated to modifying Boston and surrounding areas via various projects. The goal is to make sure all the residents get equal access to healthy, locally grown and affordable food, clean water, and playgrounds for exercising. The leading idea is to promote healthier life style by integrating healthy nutrition and fitness into everyday’s life of Boston’s residents. Boston is the home of various nations and races, so another goal is to achieve racial equality and include the whole community into these projects.

heart-healthyParticularly important part of all Boston Collaborative for Food and Fitness activities is to provide youth development aspect. Focused on giving good role models among adults and engaging youth in dialogue within the organization, Boston Collaborative is trying to educate youth to understand the strong and important connection between health in the long run and healthy way of living. Raising children aware of these aspects and environmentally responsible is the great mission of Boston Collaborative for Food and Fitness. They have to understand the importance and implement the methods in their lives, so healthy nutrition, regular exercise and individual engaging in creating healthy and satisfying social atmosphere become an integrated part of their lives.

Activities of the organization

fitness1Though various projects and activities of this organization are conducted on daily bases during the year, the greatest events are certainly regular quarterly meetings. The Boston Collaborative for Food and Fitness cooperates closely with Youth and Family Committee in an attempt to engage all layers of society into development and implementation of its ideas. Currently, several projects, such as The Food Project and The School Nutrition are developing strategies for a healthier approach to nutrition, especially in schools and in families with lower incomes. These strategies should be applied statewide.

Everyone interested in these ideas is encouraged to join the Boston Collaborative and take part in quarterly meetings and various projects. The invitation particularly goes to everyone directly included in these sectors.

The Community currently counts several thousand members, but the passionate group of volunteers is the core of the organization. Actual president of the Boston Collaborative is Karen Spiller, and the new presidents are chosen in every few years. All activities are focused on providing affordable healthy fresh food and accessible places for physical activity available to everyone in Boston. Members of the community propose various ideas and plans for projects, but new ideas and suggestions are always welcome. As well as the new members.
